runDisney Dopey Challenge is Official

This post is in follow up to yesterday's post about one of the very recent runDisney rumors...the Dopey Challenge.
Is Dopey the only one nutty enough to do this Challenge?
Or are you too?!
I just woke up from a 3+ hour nap (haven't slept more than 3 hours the past 2 nights) to find out that runDisney had made an official news announcement at 3pm EST. Yes, the Challenge is ON! It will involve the Family 5K, the new Minnie Mouse 10K, the WDW Half Marathon and the WDW Full Marathon. Participants who finish at the races in the allotted time will receive a total of 6 medals...one for each of the races, Goofy Challenge and Dopey Challenge. So much for what I predicted about the medal situation!

Registration opens on Tuesday, April 9th at noon EST. You must register for the Dopey Challenge specifically to get the Dopey Challenge medal.

I'm just making a wild guess that this will sell out within days if not hours!! Just like the Dumbo Double Dare in Disneyland did...wow, that was a lot of "D's"!! lol!

Now we just have to see if the Disneyland - Paris rumor is true as well...

runDisney Rumors in Full Force

Well, anyone who is a Disney fanatic or a fan of the runDisney races has probably heard a couple of rumors that are spreading like wildfire across the Disney running community. Now, let me set this straight before I continue...I am not a Disney fanatic! Yes, I do Disney races but just for fun...heck, I'm not a big picture taker or an aficionado of all things Disney. My main reason for doing runDisney races is to go to the parks! You see, I grew up in Northern California and every summer without fail was the family trip to the Southern California theme parks. Back then Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, Sea World, Tiajuana (yes, I do consider that place a theme park!), Animal Safari, LA and San Diego Zoos and whatever else I'm forgetting. No...we very rarely went to the beaches and I don't know why. Anyway...my runDisney friends are going to disown me after they realize I'm just not as nutty about Disney as they are! lol! So let's explore these two rumors:

Rumor #1: Dopey Race Challenge

For the past 8 or so years, runDisney has had the Goofy Race Challenge. On Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend those crazy enough to do it would run the half marathon (13.1 miles) on Saturday and the full marathon (26.2 miles) on Sunday. Those that completed both races for a total of 39.3 miles in one weekend got medals for each race plus a third medal for finishing the Goofy Challenge.

2013 Goofy Challenge medals.
In the past year (I don't know about before then because I just started racing in 2012) some have added on the Family 5K onto the Goofy Challenge dubbing the new 42.4 mile weekend distance as an unofficial (non-runDisney sanctioned) Dopey Challenge.

Update 3/21/13 @1:22pm MDT:
I need to make a correction here. It looks like the Dopey Challenge will involve a new 10K race, the half marathon and the full marathon for a total of 45.5 miles in one weekend. I am assuming that the Goofy Challenge will remain as the half marathon and full marathon. So, for those bling collectors out there it's looking like a potential 5 medal weekend: a rubber medallion for the 5K, a 10K medal, a half marathon medal , a full marathon medal, a Goofy medal and a Dopey medal. Now, to be straight...if you register for the Dopey Challenge you are not officially part of the Goofy Challenge (or at least I assume so) so they may/may not provide a Goofy medal. It's kind of like if you did't get into the new Dumbo Double Dare (new 10K race plus the Disneyland Half Marathon) and signed up for each race separately you wouldn't get the DDD medal.

In the past several days online chatter has been discussing how people are thinking that as of 2014 runDisney will officially sanction the Dopey Challenge. This seems to be coming to fruition because on the sports registration site Active.com that runDisney uses for race registrations the following information for the 2014 WDW Marathon Weekend has been posted:

Now, unless you're familiar with the Goofy and Dopey Challenges you may not know what they mean because no explanation of the Challenges are provided in the information on the page. No information about Dopey is included on the 2014 WDW Marathon Weekend page on the runDisney website either. So, it's only those of us in the know who understand what the Dopey Challenge is.

Am I crazy enough to do this if it happens? Yes, not in 2014, but I have been planning to do Goofy in 2015 when they celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Goofy Challenge. So, either way I'll be doing Goofy or Dopey in 2015. It'll probably be the only time that I actually do the Challenge because of the cost involved, but it will likely be my last runDisney Coast to Coast medal (running one race at Disneyland and one race at WDW in a calendar year) unless they come up with some new races in the future.

Would you be crazy enough to spend the dough, travel expense and complete 42.4 miles in a single weekend? And by the way...if Dopey does happen...it'll probably sell out in a flash!

UPDATE on 3/22/13 @ 4:52pm MST: The Dopey Challenge has been officially announced by runDisney. Follow up blog post is here.

Rumor #2: Disneyland - Paris Race

Yes...Paris...as in Paris, France! After the Princess Half Marathon in February some participants started receiving post race surveys and some included questions about interest in a race, likely a half marathon, at Disneyland - Paris. Unfortunately my survey didn't ask me about it.  :-/

Disneyland - Paris sign.
Now, runDisney runners are a lot of Disney fanatics...so did Disney really think that they'd say, "No, not interested?" Almost everyone is excited about this race which is rumored to happen in fall 2014 if it does actually happen. I've read some posts by other bloggers saying that the registration cost of the race would be around $70 with packages including lodging topping off at around $1,100. But then you have to also calculate in air fare on top of that.

For me this would be a one time race. The first year and that would be it. Just to say that I did it. The draw, again not being a real Disney fanatic is to finally go to Disneyland - Paris which was on the drawing boards but never came to fruition while the hubs and I were stationed in England. I want to be able to say that I've been there at least once. I also happen to love Paris having been there twice in my life. Just walking around the city is a grand experience...did that the first time when I was 14 years old on a European study tour. My friend and I were the youngest in the group with everyone else as soon to be seniors or seniors who had just graduated...we were barely entering high school! Oh, but I digress...wait, let me digress once more...second time was with the hubs after the birth of our first born. My mother came to England to see her first grandchild, handed us some cash and said to go to Paris so she could spend time with the baby alone. We left within hours, no hotel reservations, no plan of attack and one hellaciously rough ferry ride (spent most of it puking my guts out) to spend an unplanned weekend in the City of Lights at the ages of 21 & 22. Wow. OK...back on track now...

Paris, France at the top of Notre Dame Cathedral.
December 1985, 3 wks post-partum.
The other part of the draw for this race for me would be the opportunity to cross the Channel again (hopefully not in rough seas) and visit England...a place that I totally love and if I had to live in a different country it would either be in England or Australia (haven't been there yet though). I'd love to go through our old stomping grounds in the area of Banbury and RAF Upper Heyford do some repeat sightseeing in London and just cruise the countryside driving on the opposite side of the road. I used to get a little crazy in the roundabouts when we lived there! lol!

Of course being able to run in France, not necessarily Paris since Disneyland is about 20 miles outside of town, would be an experience. I don't think that I'd ever go and run the Paris Marathon or anything but to be able to say I've hit the European Disneyland, get back to England and do my first continent outside of North America would be too cool! And I would imagine that Disney would come up with a trans-continent medal much like the Coast to Coast medal if they do make this happen.

So yes, I'd be in if this happens. At least once...probably only once. Would you be willing to make the trans-continental trip just to run this race?

By the way...Hey, runDisney...How about a race at Disneyland - Tokyo?? I'd be totally in for that as well...but again, only once!

Race Recap: Princess HM Weekend, Race Days

5K Race Day: Saturday, February 23, 2013 @ 6:30am
Half Marathon: Sunday , February 24, 2013 @ 5:45am
Location: Walt Disney World Resort, Lake Buena Vista, FL

HM Race Day - 1/5K Race Day): Saturday, February 23, 2013

Royal Family 5K Course Map
Gear/outfit for the Royal Family 5K.
I knew that this day was going to be a bit of a busy one going in between the 5K, volunteering at the SparkeSkirts booth, taping up a new friend's knee and a Tink HM reunion...all before 3pm. Since we had to be on the bus no later than 5:45am we managed to get up and out the door by about 4:30am if I remember correctly. The shuttle was running about 15 minutes late but we still managed to get on the second bus and made it to the start of the 5K in plenty of time. Once we got our bearings we found our way to our corral and looked for one of our Tink HM friends, Jessica. We finally found her and we all planned to just walk the race since it wasn't being timed.
TinkerBell HM sisters reunited at the Royal Family 5K.

 Corral D start...

As the race finally started and we were on our way at probably close to 7:15 due to our corral placement. We had jogged a little off and on when I looked at my phone and noticed that it was nearly 8am...really, you can't ever go too fast at a Disney race because it's so crowded especially in Epcot where the 5K was run. It dawned on my that if I didn't hurry up I'd be late for my shirt at the expo so we decided to go on and run/walk the rest of the race. I have to say that that run was a bit brutal between the heat and humidity...something I've been without since a vacation at WDW in 2004! I really have no idea of our time, but we finally finished around 8:30 or so. I had texted Leah at the booth to let her know that I was running late (was supposed to be there 8:30) and that I'd get there as soon as possible. Dianne had to pick up her gear bag and I went ahead and caught the first bus I could (about a 20 minute wait) to get back to the resort to shower, change and catch the bus to the expo. Later that day I would finally see Dianne's funny tweet of:

"The Royal 5K finished! The 1st person to complete the 5K came in about 17 minutes. Beth & I hadn't even started the race yet in corral D! LMAO!!"

Fellow Tink HM sister, Sandra, did the 5K in this reception dress...heat, humidity and all!

I got back to the room and immediately took a quick shower and got ready to go work the expo. Leah, the owner of Sparkle Skirts, had come up with an idea to have the volunteers dress up and we were only told to wear a black shirt, black tights or capris and black/neutral shoes. We had no idea of what she had in mind. Because of all my tats (23 total) and the Disney policy of not showing tattoos, I ended up in a long sleeve black shirt and black leggings...talk about hot in 80°F and  high humidity!! OMG!! I got on the shuttle to the expo and arrived just after 9am to a line, literally almost a mile long! I ran up (sweating) to the door and begged to be let in since I was late for my shift...thankfully I didn't get the runaround like I did at the TinkerBell Expo and they let me right in...it may have helped that I was wearing an old SparkleSkirts name tag from the Wine & Dine expo...

The booth was already pretty much hopping with activity. I got my costume (a page) and started to work. I have to say that I really love working the SparkleSkirts booths...I believe in this product so much that I'd literally work for them free full time!! I own about 10 of their SparkleTech skorts and a pair of MuddBuster capris. Love them all!! :D

The only pic I have in the page costume for the SparkleSkirts booth.
Thanks Mel!
After working until about 1:20pm I headed over to one of the the Laguna Bar at Coronado Springs (the resort where the expo was held due to spring training at ESPN World of Sports) for the Tink HM reunion. It only turned out being Jessica and I but we had some lunch and caught up on things since Tink before heading  in our own directions. I headed back to the expo to meet Laura, a member of the Disney's Princess HM Facebook group, who I was going to tape/show her how to tape her knees with KT Tape. Having gotten that done I headed back to the resort to rest up for a couple of hours before heading back out to Downtown Disney to finally get my fish and chips at Cooke's of Dublin and my brownie hot fudge (Treasure Island) sundae at Ghiradelli.
Fish n Chips (extra filet) at Cooke's of Dublin in Downtown Disney - WDW.
The meal I live for when I go to WDW!
Treasure Island (warm brownie hot fudge) sundae.
The desert I live for whenever I can get to a Ghiradelli  Ice Cream shop!
After dinner I pretty much called it a night and headed back to the resort to get all my gear ready for the half marathon the next morning. I literally was so full that I was waddling like Donald Duck back to the room! lol!
Once I got back to the resort and checked the transportation times I was kind of irked that there was only a one hour window to catch the shuttle between 3 and 4am!! Joy! I headed back to the room and layed out all my gear, got my gear bag ready to go aside from the items that needed refrigeration and taped up my knees. I think I pretty much died at that point and was planning on waking up just before 2am (I'm one of those runners who has to take a pre-race shower just to wake up).

HM Race Day: Sunday, February 23, 2013
My internal body clock apparently had different ideas and I ended up waking up at around 12:40am so I just played on the internet for a while before finally getting up to shower and get ready for the race. Dianne and I got to the first bus at 3am still half asleep, I think. Since Dianne had purchased entry into the VIP tent I just headed out to see who I could or couldn't find and ended up just chilling behind the water table until it was time to head out to the corrals. Dianne and I had planned to meet up again because we were both in Corral C...or so I thought. Somehow Dianne missed Jessica, who I had met up with, and I as she walked towards the corrals. Jessica and I split up because she was looking for her mom and I went to catch up with Diann. It was then that I realized, after finally looking at my bib, that I was actually in Corral D and not C. At that point I was on my own again...no biggie since I run most of my races solo anyway...and just waited for the start and did some warming up.

As each corral was released and given the 5 minute wait in between each corral I finally hit the ground walking around 6:15am or so. As usual at any runDisney half marathon the first 5K was crowded as all get out and should always be approached as a simple warm up...at least in my eyes. I was finally able to set started using the Galloway 30/30 (30 sec run/30 sec walk) interval that I had wanted to try due to my ongoing issues with injuries. As I've said before, I'm not a Disney fanatic or anything...I simply enjoy the Disney races and the chance to hit up the parks so I  don't tend to take pics during the races. I did stop for one pic outside the castle but for the rest of the time I just pretty much kept going. The heat and humidity was brutal for this (now) desert living girl. By the halfway point, if not before I was pouring water on my head and all over my body at each water stop (roughly every 1.5 miles) just to keep cool and comfortable. As long as I was soaking wet I was pretty much comfortable...when I dried out is when the humidity started taking it's toll.  The course itself was fairly nice with the occasional bottle necks like in Sleeping Beauty's castle and certain areas within the parks but for the most part was pretty wide open otherwise.

2013 Princess HM Course Map
As I hit mile 10 I was going to do the Chicken Dance at the mile marker for "official" induction into the Pacebook Running Club Facebook Group, but as I switched my phone on it died. Oh well, no Chicken Dance for me until Tink HM 2013 I guess! I don't remember the hills/off ramps/overpasses being as dreadful during Wine & Dine HM in November but it may have also been the heat and humidity affecting my thought process as well. I swear between an off ramp and overpass and some gently, low rolling hill after that towards the end of the race I forgot that I was in Florida at sea level  where I shouldn't be feeling quite as worn out as I was. It almost felt like being back at the A2A (Arbuckle to Ardmore) HM in Oklahoma with all the hills!!

I finally finished at 3:10 and some change...not my best, but also not my worst. I was hoping for under 3 hours but between the heat and humidity I'll take the just finishing factor. All in all I felt pretty good, but when I had to turn off my phone to conserve battery power I lost my interval timer so I think I pushed a bit too much and wore myself out sooner than needed. I had some minor cramping during the race but nothing to write home about. As I crossed the finish line I broke out with my other two medals (Tink, Royal Family 5K) and picked up my PHM and second Coast to Coast medal and took a finish line pic with all four...that I still have yet to order!

Princess HM Medal Haul:  Royal Family 5K medallion,
Coast to Coast 2013 and PHM 5th Anniversary  medals.
After the race I headed back to the resort to shower, change and I had originally planned to head out to the Disney Studios (specifically just to ride Tower of Terror) but I was so tired that I just opted to stay in and do some laundry and just relax and begin packing since I had to catch the Magical Express to the airport at 3:45am! I got everything done and even tossed my tech clothes into the dryer (I usually let them air dry) to be sure they were dry before I packed. I think I turned in pretty early and pretty much died...

What did I like about this race?
It was an okay course and meeting up with friends was probably the best part. Working at the SparkleSkirts booth is always a pleasure as well!

What did I not like about this race?
The Expo was nuts!! Not well organized in my opinion compared to the 2 TinkerBell  and the Wine & Dine HM's expos. Packet pickup was pretty smooth though! Way too many people...26K+ total runners (inluding men, who aren't counted officially). Just too big of a field for some of the bottleneck areas. Just felt like we were being packed in like sardines...

Would I do this race again?
Probably not. Firstly because it's expensive to do 2 Disney races a year on opposite coasts, but also I have no great urge to. My only goal with the runDisney races is to run each race once (except for Tink and any new HMs or fulls that they start) so that I can get a Coast to Coast medal for each different race.

Recap: Walt Disney World Wine & Dine Half Marathon

Race Day: Saturday, November 11, 2012 at 10pm

Race Day – 2: Travel Day

Well, I got up this morning at 4:30am to start getting ready for my drive to the Lubbock airport to catch my flight to Orlando. Darn this time change…first we get the extra hour with the time change and then I lose it again having to cross the border and eventually to the Eastern time zone. I’m traveling on my crutches with a post-op walking shoe and my foot wrapped  in an ACE wrap. Let me tell you, trying to drag my suitcase and carry on backpack to the car was not easy!

Once I got on the road things were much better. I decided to park in an off airport lot so that they could shuttle me to the terminal and I wouldn’t have to deal with  except to get it to the check in counter to have them put the tag on the bag. As I headed to the security check point it took me forever to get everything ready to place in the bins.  I stood next to the chair while I was getting everything settled and allowed probably over  a dozen people to go by me.  I grabbed some breakfast (bagel, cream cheese and a Sprite) then headed to the customer service desk to get a blue tag for early boarding. Nice bonus for having to use crutches!

This was a direct flight to Orlando with a short stop in Austin to take in more passengers. We arrived just a little early at about 2pm and I went to grab my one bag (I had carried my race gear with me as my carry on).  With that done fairly quickly, we were able to arrive a little earlier than anticipated. Once I picked up my bag I headed to the transportation area to catch the Magical Express to the All Stars Music Resort. Unfortunately that was the wrong side to check in. The bus driver was kind enough to drive me over to the other area so I didn’t have to mess with my bag and crutches. I finally made it through check in and was able to board the bus within about 10 minutes. The drive to the resort was pretty much like I remembered it. The driver dropped people of at several other stops before getting to my hotel.

Check in at the hotel was a joke! I had done the online check in so that it would be much faster, but it turned out that there was no one manning the online check in area. The three concierges eventually took the first 3 people in line, but after that they began working with people in the concierge line. I took pics of almost each line to show you what I was talking about…I hope that this is not an every day occurrence! Eventually a single clerk came out and started helping the online check in waiting line which by then had blossomed to about 6-8 people/families. People who were waiting for the regular check in actually finished about 10 minutes fast than me and I was the first one in the online check in!
All Stars Movie Resort - Love Bug 6 where I stayed.

For me this was the first stay in a Disney resort of any kind. The room was decent with 2 double beds which was comfortable (only slept in one), a full tub/shower, sink outside the bathroom, a table or 2 and a mini-fridge which didn’t have a freezer. There were no microwaves or coffee makers in the room. The bathroom/sink area was nice because there was a curtain separating the sink area from the sleeping area. That way if you have an early riser in the group (or runners getting ready for an early morning half or full marathon) the rest of the non-running group can sleep.

For the rest of the night I found out how to make the trek to the Shades of Green (SoG)  military resort to shop for some breakfast and snack items. Just FYI get on the bus or monorail to the Magic Kingdom then either take the monorail to the Polynesian exiting through the main enterance and following the walkway and signs. The walk is about a quarter mile. From the Magic Kingdom you can also walk past the monorail entrances and catch the Shades of Green bus that stops where all the other non-Disney buses stop...this is maybe a 10 minute ride once the bus leaves. One quart of low fat milk, 2 pints of chocolate milk, 3 large individual serving cups of Frosted Flakes, a regular bag of Keebler cookies (not a mini bag),  a large bag of beef jerky and a couple of other things came out to just over $25. The prices there were basically the same at any military convenience store.  After getting back to the room (it took about 20-30 minutes each way) I put everything away and headed for the Food Court which reminded me of a college cafeteria. I got an individual sized pepperoni pizza and a bottle of Sprite which came out to about $14. took my pizza and my expensive food and headed back to the room to eat and chill out.

Race Day – 1: The Expo

After about 6 hours sleep (the longest stretch of sleep in a long while), I got up just before 6am. Of course I spent nearly an hour or so playing on Facebook before getting ready for breakfast. The expo wasn’t opening until 10am so I decided to go to the food court because I needed spoons and while I was there I also realized that I needed some bananas (the SoG didn’t have any fresh fruit that I saw) as well as some orange juice. So, I broke down and bought them in the food court for $1.49 for each banana (got 3) and $3.50 for each individual serving of Simply Orange orange juice (got 3).  For those 6 things and tax the total price was just shy of $16!! OUCH!! I was trying to resist the urge to get anything else but for some reason pancakes just sounded good so I ended up with 3 lid sized pancakes and 2 slices of bacon for about $12. I headed back for the room to chill for a while as the first bus to the expo wasn’t until 8:30am. Some TV and Facebook later I headed to the pick up point at 8am because I didn’t know how crowded the line would be. Fortunately, it wasn’t totally full and I was able to get a front seat. BTW, I had ditched the crutches but was still wrapped in the ACE wrap and using the post-op walking shoe.

There was a bit of a waiting line to get through the entrance to ESPN and then another line to wait for packet pickup. Once I got in I headed to the line for my bib number, or what I thought was my number. Thankfully, I looked at my waiver again and I was supposed to be in the line to the left of me which was much, much shorter and moving much, much faster! Score! I got my packet about 10 minutes after I moved to the correct line and made a beeline to the official runDisney store. OMG, the line for the cash registers was LONG. I mean long enough that it snaked through the merch store and was going nearly halfway into the stadium. Thankfully it was moving fairly decent so I was probably in line only for 15 minutes or so. I walked out with only buying 2 tech shirts (I for the event itself and one for the Coast to Coast Challenge). I then headed over to the Jostens Center where we were to pick up our race shirts and where the actual expo was being held. I walked around a bit making sure that I found the SparkleSkirts booth where I would be volunteering the following day so that I could introduce myself to the owner, Leah. There was plenty to see or do but not enough money to do it all! I did buy a new handheld Nathan hydration bottle (I have an Amphipod one that I hate), a couple of sports bras (one was a bold, bright yellow that I’ve been looking for forever) and a few other things as well as a few freebies.
After the expo I decided to head to Downtown Disney for some dinner and maybe walk around. I headed directly for my absolute favorite Disney restaurant…Poole’s Dublin Fish & Chips to crave my fish & chips craving. Then I headed out to my next favorite place Ghiradelli’s Soda Shop to get a brownie sundae. YUMMO!! I was ready to call it a day so I did absolutely no looking around instead heading back to the room on the resort shuttle and setting out my outfits for the Saturday. I set up my camo SparkleSkirt and black tank to wear while working the expo and then my cheap, but functional Eeyore outfit. I did have a sweet tooth attack so I headed to the food court for a snack of a great chocolate croissant, something I haven’t had for years. The rest of the night was spent just chilling and watching TV. I even managed to fall asleep sometime after 9pm and had a really nice extended 8 hour slumber.

Race Day

I woke up at about 5:30am without the alarm after getting a full night’s sleep, something I hadn’t had in a very long time. After doing my ritual of playing on Facebook for awhile before having my standard breakfast for the trip of Frosted Flakes, banana, milk and orange juice. I got dressed in my camo outfit for the SparkleSkirts booth at the expo and headed out the door to catch the first shuttle to the ESPN center. The shuttle was running about 15 minutes late and I even checked with a taxi to see how much it would cost for the trip and for less than a 5 minute ride it was going to be about $15! So, I waited for the shuttle. It finally came at about 10 minutes until 10am and I ran for the Jostens Center so that I could get in before the expo opened. I had to sweet talk the older gentleman who was limiting access since the expo hadn’t actually opened yet to let me in since I didn’t have an exhibitor badge. I arrived at the booth (after quickly making an appointment for a massage after my shift) and introduced myself to the other girls who had volunteered to work the booth as well as to Leah Powell, the owner of SparkleSkirts. Now, realize that the last time I had worked retail was back in high school when I worked at Sears. It was like I had stepped right back into that mode. I was showing people the shorts under the tech skirt and the huge pockets on each  side, the fact that these shorts NEVER ride up, then there’s the 12” zippered pocket on the waistband and the fact that they are made in the USA. I was pushing the new SparkleSkirts MuddBuster shorts and capris made especially for those ladies who love doing mud and obstacle runs. The wicking material for these items is newer and better than the older model, has double paneling front and back so nothing shows through when your soaking wet, has a zip pocket on the back waistband and best of all has 2 large four inch mesh pockets on the legs that will allow water/mud and any junk that may end up in the pockets to drain. I also was pushing the original SparkleSkirts which are just cover skirts that you wear over your own shorts, capris or tights. I swear I love this brand of running skirt and will likely start getting more of them versus some of the other running skirt brands that I use.

I have to say that I had a blast working the booth and hope to do this again at another expo. For my time, just short of 4 hours, I got a $100 store credit which I was able to spend on the spot. I got a Minnie Mouse tech skirt, a brown and multicolor paisley tech skirt and a new medal rack since my current one is completely full. I did go over my $100 by $40 but still that’s not bad for some time and 2 skirts that were normally $65 each and a medal rack that was normally $35. The Minnie Mouse Skirt and the medal rack were on clearance prices of $60 and $20 respectively. After I picked out my stuff, I walked around the expo again until it was time for my massage. It was only a 25 minute massage for $25 but I really needed to loosen up my legs from just beginning to bear full weight again. After that I headed back to the resort to get ready for the night’s race.

The two SparkleTech Skirts and medal rack that I got for
working the SparkleSkirts booth,
plus I paid an additional $40 since I went over my earned credit.
It was about 4pm when I got back to my room so I freshened up a bit then began to get dressed. Now, I was dressing up as Eeyore in just a simple costume: a periwinkle (light purple/blue) running skirt and tank, a felt chest piece, Eeyore ear headband and a tail. It was a pretty tacky costume, but it’s a Disney race…you have to (not really) dress up in a costume of some sort to run. I grabbed my gear bag headed out to the food court to get the last of my carb loading done with a plate of spaghetti with meatballs. By the time I finished eating it was 6:40pm so I headed out to wait for the first bus to the starting line.

The outfit looked better just laid out on the bed!
And yes, there's a tail, you just can't see it.
The bus was full of people chatting away and you could feel the excitement building. I tried looking around the bus for people that I knew but with no luck. So when we got dropped off at the waiting area I headed directly to the port-o-jons  for last minute emptying and then to dropped off my bag at the gear drop tent. Since it was only about 7pm, I went up near the stage area where they have the “entertainment.” This was really just an extremely energetic emcee/deejay who got the crowd riled up and dancing/stretching. I joined in with the dancing and singing from time to time (getting tired and sweaty even before the running started) and at other times was walking around to find people I knew. It was during this time that I probably lost my $10 gift card that was for the after party…I was just so ticked at myself for that, but eventually let go of the self anger. I did bump into some ladies that I’ve met from my online running groups or run with at other races (most at the Tinkerbell HM).

Finally at around 9:30pm the announcement was made for everyone to start heading to their appropriate corrals. Earlier I had decided to start one of the further back corrals, like in C or D; but at the last minute I was feeling pretty confident and stayed in my assigned corral B. I did try to stay to the back of the pack but as they were asking people to move forward in the corrals I ended up in the middle of the pack. We waited, and waited, and waited some more until finally the 10 minute mark was announced. Everyone started warming up with earnest and at 9:55pm the wheelchair racer was on his way. Five minutes later corral A was released to the loud cheers, music and fireworks. Then it was my corrals turn…we got the same cheers, music and fireworks…and as we crossed the starting line I forgot about the worries of my foot and began running. I took off too fast as usual going at about a 10:38-10:48  pace for the first 3 miles or so. I finally slowed down and by mile 6 I was in my usual pace range of 12:30 - 13 :30.

Blurry pic of the starting line...sorry!
We headed through the Disney Studios, went back on the road to the Animal Kingdom then onto Epcot. The course was mostly flat with several overpasses that weren't bad at all. I can't really say that it was scenic since it was on the major roads on the Disney Property so it's usually lined with trees, canals and such but since this is a night race you didn't really get to see the scenery. There were the usual photo ops with Disney characters, but I’m not a huge Disney fanatic so the character pics really didn’t mean anything to me. Call me jaded, but I just think it’s because I grew up going to Disneyland almost every summer when I was growing up and even then I was not a kid who really wanted to take pics with the characters.

These pics are of the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights

The finish line was at Epcot, we had to actually go through one of the buildings and then under the overhang on one side of Spaceship Earth before heading to the back lot and finally the finish line. After crossing the line I was relieved to finish uninjured…I didn’t even care about my time. Just the fact that I finished after 4 weeks of absolutely no training and only a day and a half with partial/full weight bearing was good enough for me. I got my finisher’s medal then grabbed a banana and a post race snack box (a piece of Almond Roca, nut/raisin packet, crackers, spreadable cheese, hard energy candy and some other small stuff) definitely not anything special. I headed over to the Coast to Coast medal booth to pick mine up then got my bag at gear check. It was kind of hard to find a place to sit. At TinkerBell there was a large area right next to the finish that you could plop down just about anywhere, but at this race it seemed that they had blocked off the waiting area so that we couldn’t sit there. Instead there was just a small block of ground maybe the size of a small 1 bedroom bungalow that everyone was sitting. I had brought my usual post race replenishment and sat there eating beef jerky, 2 pints of chocolate milk and the banana. By the time I was done taking pics of the medals and eating I was too full to even consider heading over to the after party where different booths were serving different drinks and foods from all over the world. Instead, I hopped on the bus back to the resort, took a cold bath, then a warm shower before going to sleep at nearly 6am.

Almost there! Really!
Less than a mile to go!
Laser light show during the last quarter mile.
The finish line, finally!!
Race Day +1

Oddly enough I woke up just before 10am which is fairly normal for me but I had taken a Xanax when I went to bed so I should have been out for a couple more hours. I did my morning routine: Facebook, breakfast and shower and decided that I’d do my laundry before going home. So I spent from about noon to 1:30pm doing laundry, having another chocolate croissant and repacking the suitcase.  Around 4pm I decided that I needed to eat a late lunch/dinner…the dilemma was where to eat.  That was pretty easily solved considering that my favorite Disney restaurant is in Downtown Disney so off I went and caught the shuttle back over to DTD and headed straight back to Poole’s for my fish and chips and then over to Ghiradelli’s for another brownie sundae. This pretty much ended up my short stay in WDW on a very happy note. All that I had left to do was make sure my reservation for the Magical Express (airport transportation) was all set for the next morning and I donated my crutches to the front desk where they bring left behind strollers, wheelchairs, etc. into the baggage hold room and give them out to people who need them while at the resort. I went to sleep pretty early, before 9pm and slept great aside from some really weird dreams that seemed very realistic…not nightmares but just outrageously nonsensical dreams.

Race Day +2

I woke up at 4:45am and took my shower, finished packing the tech clothes that hadn’t been all the way dry after being washed on Saturday and had breakfast while playing on Facebook. At 5:15 I rolled my suitcase over to the front of the hotel where they would do the airline check in. They printed up my boarding pass and took possession of my bag and made sure that it got on the plane. One less bother to worry about on the trip home. My pick up time for the Express was at 6:15 and they arrived right on time.

We arrived at the Orlando airport at about 7am and since I was already checked in, I went straight to the security line and slowly made my way through. As I got to the TSA agent, she saw my military ID and told me to go to the priority line. I asked if she was sure since I am only a dependent but she said go ahead. I moved over there and showed the agent my ID and again asked about me being allowed to use the priority line. She replied that as long as on an “operation” military could use the priority line. So I guess the TSA doesn’t get any training on what the different ID cards for the military indicate, so I just went with it and was through the security checkpoint in less than 5 minutes. I don’t know if I’m brave enough to try that again, but it would be nice if it was true and correct.

After getting on the shuttle for the gates, I noticed a guy who was vomiting near constantly. My first thought was, “I hope he’s not on my flight.” I got to the gate I plugged in at a charging station (surprise, surprise) and waited for boarding to start. Once I got on the flight, somehow managing to wrangle an aisle seat even though I was within the last 35 to board. The flight to Austin was a little bumpy and within the first 30 minutes I began to hear the retching and vomiting…it was the guy from the shuttle gates. Joy. Within another 20 minutes or so a guy in the front row began vomiting as well. Oh joy…again. I just tried to sleep and ignore the vomiting going on. When we finally landed in Austin I found out that I didn’t have a boarding pass for my connecting flight. I picked one up at customer service and just waited.

My drive home was as boring as usual and it didn’t help that I was stuffed and getting sleepy. Once I made it to town, I put on all three medals again and stopped in m husband shop to let him know that I was back and do a little bragging!! :D My drive home was as boring as usual and it didn’t help that I was stuffed and getting sleepy. Once I made it to town, I put on all three medals again and stopped in m husband shop to let him know that I was back and do a little bragging!! :D

Oddly enough the flight to Lubbock was totally full but at least it was a smooth, short trip. Lubbock is a small airport so baggage claim was no big deal. I caught the off airport parking shuttle and picked up my car.

Since it was about lunch time I decided to see if any restaurants were serving free Veterans Day meals since Monday was the federal observation of the holiday. I found several places that were doing the Monday offer so I first headed to Golden Corral which I found was only doing a dinner special from 4pm-9pm. I then decided to try Texas Roadhouse where I got a great grilled pork chop, green beans, loaded baked potato, 4 dinner rolls and a soda…enough to fill me up and put me to sleep at the same time!

My Disney Coast to Coast Medal and qualifying medals.
TinkerBell Half Marathon & the Wine and Dine Half Marathon.
Official time: 3:27:22

What did I like about this race?
This is a fun, no pressure Disney race. This is one of those races that unless your a really hardcore runner you don't mind making extra stops for character pictures that sometimes have long lines.

What I did not like about this race?
Primarily the cost. All Disney races are expensive even if you sign up early. Since the race goes through the parks, there are times that the course gets quite narrow and congested but that's what you get for running in the parks! They weren't built with road races in mind. Lack of runner etiquette, even though in the final instructions and race program they review proper etiquette few seem to follow it. I tended to stay on the very far side of the course right next to the cones or curbs yet I almost got knocked over 2-3 times by runners passing where there was not enough room yet on the other side there was plenty of room to pass. That's not Disney's fault, but still something I dislike in any race.

Would I do this race again?
Yes, maybe. Because these are such expensive races my goal is to run all the half marathons and the marathon at least once except for Tink which I plan to go legacy (run it for 5 straight years). I won't do any of the shorter races unless I'm already in the area for some reason. Maybe I'll do this with my husband once he starts running his half marathons...hell could freeze over by then!

My First Long, Lone Race Journey

4/12/12 - My first long distance road trip alone & for a double half marathon

Well, I guess this was the real start to my Half Fanatics adventure. It's the first real travel I'm doing for my quest of reaching the highest level in the club possible. Up to now the only real long distance road trip I've done was a 10 hour drive to Phoenix back in the early 2000's when I was taking classes with the University of Phoenix. I had driven 22 hours straight from home to the Bay Area for a trip to visit family and friends but the whole family was with me. This was going to be a solo venture for a total of 19 hours of driving to get to my first race.

I had planned to get on the road by 5am and actually managed to be ready to go by 4:30am. However, I needed to get some snack supplies and gas up prior to leaving. Before leaving the house I began looking for the gas card that I had intended to use for the trip and couldn't find it. I went out to the car to search there but had no luck. I'd eventually have to make a call to customer service to have a new card express mailed to my cousin's house in Illinois. I ended up making a WalMart run and for some reason that took longer than expected. While in the parking lot I made the call to the gas card company and arranged the delivery. After about 20 minutes on the phone I was off to gas up before getting on the road. By the time I did get started on the drive it was after 6:30am. The sun was just starting to show itself in a nice, orange/pink glow on the eastern horizon...a far cry from the darkness I had expected to be driving in for the first hour or so of my trip.

The first five hours of the trip were relatively familiar as I had done the drive to Amarillo, TX many times plus a drive to Shamrock, TX for a dog rescue transport a few years earlier. As I traveled into McClean, TX on I-40 there was a gaggle of state troopers, local sheriff vehicles and ambulance on the eastbound side of the freeway. There had been a bad rollover of a minivan and with the number of ambulances and the appearance of the minivan I don't think the outcome was very good. Oddly enough I can't find any kind of report on the accident. I'm fairly sure it wasn't a tired imagination at work.

As I traveled further on through Shamrock there were no other occurrences of note. Once again I crossed the border into Oklahoma and once again the terrain seemed to change for the better. Although not as green and lush as in the more southern area of the state that I had visited a couple of weeks prior it was still much more green than what I am accustomed to at home. By the time I hit Oklahoma City it was lunch time and time to get my pasta feed on. I located the nearest Fazoli's which was conveniently on my route and changed the GPS to get me to the location. I knew there would be toll roads on the way but I wasn't sure of exactly they would be and I had mistakenly assumed that there would be people manning the toll stations and having done so I hadn't prepared by bringing coinage with me. I was surprised to find that the firs toll station I came to was completely unmanned and had a toll of $1.15. As I rifled through my change collection cup (thank goodness I hadn't emptied it like I planned to) I managed to find just enough silver to make the toll. As I drove on I took the exit towards Fazoli's only to find another unmanned toll station with a 35 cent toll. Again, I was lucky enough to find just enough change to meet that toll. At Fazoli's I ordered spaghetti with meat sauce and treated myself to a sweet tea just to get a little caffeine in me. I decided that before I got back on the road I'd need to get a boat load of change so I went over to the WalMart just behind the restaurant to try to buy some coins at the bank inside only to find that they didn't have any extra rolls of coinage. Then I had to go over the freeway/toll road to the BofA and had to wait in line for 20-30 minutes just to get the change that would hopefully be enough to get me through all of the remaining tolls for the trip.

I finally got back on the road after about an hour and a half total, landing myself a firm 3 hours or so behind my original schedule of arriving at my cousin's house between 7-9pm Central time. I continued on towards Joplin, MO finally paying a final toll of $4 just outside of Miami, OK. The drive through Missouri was also uneventful although for some reason the rolling hills and lush greenery, very reminiscent of my trip to Ardmore, OK, didn't register to me as being a view of my runs in the region. I'm not sure of where I had stopped to gas up in Missouri around 5pm but I realized that I wouldn't be arriving at my cousin's before 11pm or midnight so I called and told her that I'd just check into a hotel or the lodging at the Air Force base nearby so as to not disturb the family. I ended up driving through St. Louis around 10:30pm and made it to Scott AFB shortly after 11pm and was lucky enough for find that they has some space available rooms open. I checked in, got settled and layed down for a fairly good sleep on a rather hard mattress...the rooms are not the best that I've been in when using military lodging, but at $39/night I can't complain. This was evidently an older building which hadn't undergone much recent renovation and had older, squeaking floors and furniture.

Since the drive to the race venue and hotel in Evansville, Indiana was only about 3-4 hours away I decided to sleep in as much as possible and head out after checking out at around 10am and after heading back into St. Louis to pick up my race packet for Sunday's race. I woke up early, which typically happens after I lose that hour in the time change...you'd think I'd sleep late, and I drove over to the base shoppette to grab some breakfast food and was shocked to see that gas prices on base were $3.97!! Until that point the most expensive gas I had seen on the trip was $3.75. I was thankful that I didn't have to gas up at that time and returned to my room to eat. I packed up and checked out right on time and hit the road back to St. Louis.

As I was on the road, the heavens opened up and the downpour began. Now, keep in mind that I had planned for the reported warm weather in the 70-80°F range with a 30-40% chance of rain. My bad. In my part of the world a 30-40% chance of rain means that it isn't going to happen...apparently in this part of the U.S. it means that it will. I had no jacket, no full shoes (other than my running shoes which only get worn for...well...running) and no umbrella. All I had to wear were floor length maxi dresses and a pair of sandals. Doh! As I found a parking space just across the street from the stadium where packet pickup was occurring I hiked up my dress to knee length, took a deep breath, stepped directly into a puddle and began the "long" wet walk to the venue. By the time i got to the stadium, the Brooks Running people were trying to bring what they could of their outdoor display into the stadium. I entered the building dripping wet and waited in line for the expo to open. While waiting I managed to win a t-shirt from the Brooks crew which I decided I'd wear on the drive home with the shorts I had driven into Illinois wearing. By the time the expo opened (about a 30 minute wait) I was mostly dry and able to enjoy a short, quick jaunt around the expo buying only a few running based stickers and picking up my race packet. I was on the road to Evansville by 12:30pm. I filled up with gas before hitting the Illinois border...with a 20 cent price difference (less) before getting on the freeway.

Again the drive towards Evansville was full of rolling hills and lush greenery. And still it didn't sink into my brain that the course I was to run the next day would probably be much of the same. By the time I hit town my left side was aching/stiff from the two days of driving and I decided that I needed to find a massage therapist if at all possible. It was about 3:30pm when I hit town and after checking into the hotel I headed out in search of a massage therapist with an open appointment preferably later in the evening since I had a free pasta dinner to attend at 6pm after picking up my race packet at the expo. I thought I'd have plenty of time to find a massage therapist but everywhere I went they were either closed permanently or all appointments were full. It was shortly after 5pm when I gave up and decided to head to packet pickup.  Of course as I drove there the heavens once again opened up...the storm had followed me from St. Louis...and again I found myself totally drenched, parked too far away from the expo and since it was an outdoor expo in tents there was running water and puddles to contend with. Bye the time I got my packet and got through the small expo it was past 6pm...I was late for the dinner. I decided to go ahead and go and see if it was too late (in all actuality I was being cheap...I could have just bought my own dinner). I arrived in my soaking wet state again and happily found that they had just gotten midway through the salad.

The dinner was held at Biaggi's and I was seated with one relatively new Marathon Maniac, a soon to be Marathon Maniac, and a couple of 50 state marathoners. We chatted about the best races, running injuries and whatnot...normal running conversation. I met a female Marathon Maniac who was running the same double as I was, but doing the full marathons rather than the halfs like me. Boy...I don't know if I could do that. After a great tossed salad (3 servings), a large serving of spaghetti and a huge meatball, a large serving of fetuccini with Alfredo sauce, around 6 bread sticks and dessert (can't remember what it was, but it was good) I excused myself around 8pm and headed back to the hotel for a hot soak in the tub and some sleep after setting up my gear for the race the next day. Of course, the rain had stopped by the time I left the restaurant...so at least I was dry. :)

Race Recap: Bloodgusher HM

3/31/12 - Race Day - The first race of my first double (Sat/Sun races back to back)

After a 4 hour or so drive to Midland, TX yesterday I wasn't able to sleep as per my norm. I've feasted on pasta the past few days and have the location of the local Fazoli's memorized by now. I picked up my race packet at the stadium where the starting line would be and checked into the hotel. As I prepared my gear for the race I came to realize that I had packed my Nathan hydration belt but failed to grab the flasks (both liquid and gel) from the dishwasher. DOH! Luckily I had arrived early enough that the one running store was still open for an hour or so, so a quick run over there and about $45 later I walked out with a SPIbelt and a 20oz. Amphipod hand carried bottle. Now I am ready. It was time for yet another trip to Fazoli's and then bed. I wasn't happy that the race day temps would start in the mid-60°F and top out in the mid-80°F range...

First race with any Half Fanatics gear (visor).
First use of my handheld Amphipod bottle and SPIbelt.
Didn't care for either one!
I arrived at the venue fairly early having followed my GPS' long way directions. Am I the only one that the GPS on an Android phone gives you the longest way to get to a place when you're inside the city? It does fine (most times) when I'm on the highway, but in the city it seems to give me the run around. But I digress. As promised it was about 65°F at the start. This was a smaller race than I had imagined just a few hundred people for all events (half, 10K, 5K, kids run). Things started out okay...I stayed towards the back of the pack and ended up starting out faster than I should have. I seem to do that a lot. This course is FLAT...no kind of incline really. It does snake through a local neighborhood in the middle portion of the race and it's not the most scenic route either but it was something I thought I could deal with even with the heat. Boy, was I wrong.

Pre-race, waiting for the start.

Already at the back of the pack
less than a mile into the race!
As the race went on and the temp started to creep into the mid-70°s and above I found myself to be sweating heavily...no, not ladylike perspiration...just straight out sweating! I had beads of sweat dripping off my arms, face and rolling down my chest and legs! Thankfully the race director (RD) had arranged for some of the volunteers to hand out the heavy paper shop cloths doused in ice cold water at regular intervals throughout the middle of the race. By mile nine I was not only soaked from head to toe from pouring water all over myself, a la Flashdance...without the dance, and using the ice cold cloths to keep me cool. It was also at this point that I began experiencing cramping in my calves. Not sharp "you are going to stop if you know what's good for you" cramps but more like "if you know what's good for you, you'll start walking" type cramps. G2 didn't help at all with the cramping, just walking. I ended up walking most of the last miles with the occasional attempt at running only to start walking within a few steps...much like my experience at the Arizona Distance Classic. No matter what, I knew I was going to finish even if it was in last place. I kept moving, slowly at times and eventually finished 138/149 overall and 12/12 in my age group! lol!

By the time I crossed the finish line I headed to the food had the typical banana, grabbed a bottled sports drink, drank my chocolate milk and a cola (something I don't usually have right after a race). I didn't even stay for the awards ceremony since it was highly likely I didn't get anything so I went straight back to the hotel for an ice bath. I ended up making multiple trips to the ice machine and determined that if I had to take an ice bath in a hotel again (the next day) I'd just splurge and stop at a c-store to buy a few bags of ice. Thankfully I had arranged a 2pm check out so I was able to do everything I needed to at a relatively leisurely pace before heading out for my 6+ hour drive to Ardmore, OK for my next race.

Things I liked about this race: Flat course, smaller event (both a pro/con), good access to parking, good volunteerism.

Things I didn't like about this race: Heat (I know I can't hold the the RD at fault for that, especially since I had heard that the previous year involved some snow or rain), I think I'd still prefer an earlier start time (started at 9am) even if the weather was cold, I wish the course wasn't so winding through the neighborhood but it is was what it was, small bling (looks like it's the same year to year with the ribbon changed to express the date).

Would I do it again? Yes, but I'll run other races with better bling first, before repeating this race.
